Summer days in Venezia

venezia-21

Last week we spent 3 days in Venice on our way back from the Italian countryside. It’s been years since I last visited the city, so I was excited to be back.

My relationship with Venice, however, is a slightly ambiguous one; while I love the architecture, the coffee and the canals, the enormous masses of tourists and the industry nourished by it gives off the feeling of being in Disneyland. I am constantly made aware of the fact that I am also part of the problem, and I revert to dreaming about being the only tourist there.

As a consequence of this, most of our time was spent wandering on the unbeaten paths of the city, away from the rest of the tourists.

This trip was spent wandering through the more deserted passage ways of Venice, finding nice places to read (we all brought books) and drink bellini in the hot summer weather. While there, we stayed at an apartment in the eastern parts of Santa Croce, a quiet neighborhood at the center of the city. I can definitely recommend it if you don’t mind walking for a good 15-20 minutes to get to Rialto/San Marco.
