A snapchat story

Back when I started blogging, before blogs were really a thing and I had my first website on Geocities, my posts were mostly just filler text for a site that I used to build and explore my coding-abilities. I would change my layout 2 or 3 times a week, design intricate headers in photoshop and add moving marquees and falling snow to my site. So tacky, sooo early 2000s. After a while my focus shifted, and the words and the photos became more important, and the blog became more personal as it followed my daily life in Oslo. These days, the blog has evolved from website workshop, via online diary, to travel journal, and in the process I have shaved away much of the more mundane and personal stuff. But that doesn’t mean that I don’t have an outlet for that type of narcissism as well.

Like everyone and their grandma, I too have and use Snapchat more than should be allowed, legal and healthy for an app that consists of self-destructing photos. This beautiful little thing (that is apparently worth $19 billion) is with me wherever I go, and it makes me feel closer to my friends than instagram ever could. I use it when …

… I travel, to share on the go snaps from cool places, amazing views, great food and all the other things that make for a great trip! To create Snapchat envy by actively searching for the best moments that can make the desk or study hall seem even more dreary for whoever receives my snaps. #noshame

… when I’m bored at the airport or inflight, usually by drawing cartoons on my photos like the baby-Cookie Monster, or taking photos of my food/drinks/newspapers. It has also made me realize that I read most of my newspapers on airplanes.

… to talk to people without actually having to talk, or write long answers on Facebook/iMessage. To take photos of fake smiles, and cute pets, and the white paper coffee cups I decorate during afternoon lectures.

… to tell exciting Snapchat-stories about my super-exciting lifestyle at home. Like a step-by-step, minute-by-minute coverage of when I bought a new desk from IKEA.

And of course: to share photos of every other tiny detail of the never-ending story that is my life. #nofilter

Do you use Snapchat?

  • Ahh I love Snapchat! I didn’t like at the beginning as some people can use it in the wrong ways (e.g. sending cheeky texts that they will know will be deleted) but I love the way some people are so creative with it! I follow Everlane (the brand) and they’re amazing, give it a follow :) x

    • Yeah, kinky snapchat was annoying. I follow Jared Leto and Washington Post, two great snapchatters!

  • I can so relate to what you wrote about blogging and web-design. I still change my layout around quite a bit, and I miss the days where we did things by hand. I have not jumped on the snapchat-wave just yet, I think I would need friends who would be interested in doing the same for it to be fun.

    • Snapchat is not only for following friends though, there are a lot of celebrities and brands that using Snapchat (and doing it well), and we’ve even got Snapchat-celebrities now (people who’ve become famous on Snapchat). Come join the club!

    • Du var ikke alene om å være skeptisk. Det fine med ny teknologi, det vinner deg over til slutt enten du vil eller ikke. ;)
