According to one of my teachers at HPU, the Chinatown in Honolulu is the oldest Chinatown in the world. Whether or not this is true I cannot attest to, but it does make sense for it to be the oldest one in the US, given the distance between Hawaii and China compared to the rest of the US.
It starts just one block away from HPU’s downtown campus, but oddly enough I rarely take the time to venture over and into the colorful pallet that is one part Chinese, one part Hobo and one part tourists. Did however stop by both yesterday and today to eat, window-shop and take photos, and do some research for a school assignment.
Chinatown by night of course, is another thing entirely, and it needs to be experienced if you ever travel to Hawai’i. First Fridays with art shows, special sales and free drinks = like. Chinatown is also the place to go for vintage shopping in Honolulu, if you like that sort of activities ( I do ).
How do you make taking pictures like these look so easy?! What photo editing program do you use and what are your favorite features? I love your pictures – they energize me!
I really liked this post, will keep Chinatown in mind if I ever happen to visit!
Mariam: I used to use the toy camera-app, but for the last couple of months I’m back to using photoshop only. These are a mix of color layers (in turquoise and dark red) and one layer to make the entire picture lighter (curves). And of course, the right settings when I shoot photos. I made this overly blurry at times (extreme aperture) on purpose to create the vintage-look. :)
nice pictures, and i can understand that honolulu have different sides that we can now get to know… cool!
Thanks so much Maren for the detailed answer – love you!
Paula: It is my own little project this semester, to discover new sides to Oahu.
Mariam: anytime :)
Truly beautiful photos
